  • 28 & 29 JUNE - 2 SESSIONS WEEK-END" TOUR" : initiation to the potter’s wheel - 2x2,5h. For this specific occasion, we will have 4 wheels and Cathy will guide you to the specific technics of the "tournage". The process requires 2 steps: first the throwing process and the day after the trimming process

wheel ceramic image   Still a few questions?

Is wheel throwing hard?

Wheel throwing takes practice, patience, and time to grasp. Every beginner potter learns to let go of attachment to certain pieces while throwing them on the wheel since breakage and mishaps can be common. Once you find the approach and techniques that work best for you, wheel throwing comes as second nature.

What’s the difference between wheel throwing and handbuilding?

Handbuilding pottery does not use a wheel to shape the clay, while wheel throwing does. When handbuilding, a ceramic artist may use a slab roller, or simply sculpt with their hands to shape the clay. Wheel throwing pottery uses an electric or a manual pottery wheel to spin the clay while the potter shapes it. When throwing on a wheel, the potter uses their hands to center the clay, open it into a vessel, and shape it.

Is wheel throwing a good technique for beginners to learn?

While wheel throwing can take a bit more time to master than other types of pottery-building techniques, beginners can learn with practice and patience. Cathy will guide you and reassure you to find your balance and enjoy this fantastic technics!

  • OPTION GLAZING: after each session on 30/3, 17/5 and 28/6-29/6 for 1h

For those interested to finalise their creations, Cathy has proposed to guide you to the processus of glazing. She will bring a set of different colors among which you can choose to finalise your sculpture or pottery. Please bring it with you (even if this was not made in Subtile). It will then need a second firing. she will bring back your piece the following month. This specific workshop is EUR 35/h, including the colors and the firing.

Practical information

- Location: Subtile Gallery

  • Bring an apron or clothes that can get slightly dirty.

  • Bring a dish towel and a personal notebook for notes (drawings).

  • Materials and clay are provided.

Your creations will be fired in Cathy’s atelier and will be delivered in the gallery few weeks later.

You must be aware that ceramics is not an easy art, and the firing process always carries an element of surprise. Despite Cathy's diligent monitoring, air bubbles can be hidden and may cause the piece to break during firing. This is part of the learning process.

 - Price:

  • EUR 100 for 3H
  • EUR 35 for 1h glazing
  • EUR 200 for the 5h Throwing workshop of June. Any piece created and approved by Cathy will be fired. Please note if you choose the morning session you shall come back in the morning as well the following day as we have only 4 wheels.

- Language: FR, (but EN possible if needed)
